Foley Research Group Lab Equipment

Our group is home to a number of unique facilities.

High Temperature Furnace (The Red Devil)

The Red Devil is able to reach up to 2200 3/4C under an argon atmosphere. High vacuum annealing can be performed at lower temperatures.

Gas Permeation Measurements

Pressure rise measurements versus time on the permeate side of a membrane enables calculation of permeances of a variety of pure gases. Tubular and planar membrane morphologies can be studied in this set-up for pressure drops in the range of up to 150 psia.

Electroanalytical Measurements

Model 263A Potentiostat/Galvanostat capable of performing several electroanalytical measurements such as cyclic voltammetry, linear sweep voltammetry, chronopotentiometry and chronoamperometry. Also have the capabilities to electrochemical impedance measurements.

Methyl Chloride Pore Size Distribution

The apparatus is a microbalance, which can record sample weight change in the process of adsorption. A pore size distribution can then be calculated with methyl chloride equilibrium adsorption data.

Differential Reactor for Catalysis

Setup suitable for monitoring differential rates of gas phase reactions. Gaseous products/reactants are auto-sampled to an in-line gas chromatograph.

Electrochemical Anodization of Aluminum

Electrochemical cell operated at 2oC using a constant DC power supply (Hewlett Packard, 0-120V). Pore size of the anodized aluminum oxide membrane is directly proportional to the voltage applied during the electrochemical oxidation.
