Picture of graduate student Bo Yi My current research is focused on modified nanoporous carbon (NPC) used in hydrogen storage. Carbon materials have been widely studied in storing hydrogen due to their diversity in nanostructure. NPC has highly curved graphatic layers and microporosity that can host hydrogen molecules. Its microposity and mesoporosity can be adjusted by functional single wall nanotube (f-SWNT). But the binding energy between carbon and hydrogen is small which leads to an unpractical low desorption temperature. Noncarbon light-element, like N, B, has higher binding energy with hydrogen than carbon. Combining NPC with these elements is a potential way to achieve optimun binding energy. My current experiment is to treat NPC and SWNT modified NPC with N, B reagent for optimize nanostructure for hydrogen adsorption.
