Andrew Zydney named interim co-director
of the new Institute for Natural Gas Research at Penn State

Penn State announces the creation of the Institute for Natural Gas Research (INGaR), a collaboration between the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences and the College of Engineering.

Andrew Zydney, Chemical Engineering Department Head and InGaR interim co-director said, "There's a benefit of having multiple faculty with very diverse backgrounds and interests working together on complex problems that cut across disciplines." Dr. Zydney continues to explain, "And, of course, there's a hope that this enables an opportunity to go after funding sources that an individual faculty member would never be able to do on their own."

Currently, there are 70 faculty members in various departments across the university conducting significant research in natural gas and related areas. This number will continue to grow as the Institute adds other colleges and departments.

The increase in opportunities for students is also apparent. in 1999 only 30 undergraduates were enrolled petroleum and natural gas engineering option, now over 500 undergraduates are enrolled in this option which is offered by the Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering.
