Sheehan awarded third place presentation at Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Division Graduate Award Symposium

8/29/2016

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA — James Sheehan, a graduate student in the Department of Chemical Engineering was awarded third place at the sixth annual Industrial and Engineering Chemistry (IE&C) Division Graduate Award Symposium for his talk, “Product formation and kinetics from the fast hydrothermal liquefaction of soy protein isolate.” The symposium was held during the 252nd American Chemical Society National Meeting in Philadelphia August 21-25.

Sheehan, a third year Ph.D. student advised by Phillip Savage, delivered a talk that addressed how water at elevated temperatures and pressures could transform proteins into fuel precursors and nutrient co-products.

A native of Saint Charles, Illinois, Sheehan received his bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 2014.

The IE&C Division Graduate Award Symposium provides outstanding graduate students in the chemical sciences an opportunity to disseminate their research to the global professional community. The symposium seeks to highlight research that is relevant to industrial and engineering chemistry in general, and/or to the subdivisions within I&EC, which are: applied chemical technology; green chemistry and engineering novel chemistry for industrial applications; and separation science and technology.
