REU program offers undergraduates valuable research experience

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Applications are currently being accepted for the Department of Chemical Engineering’s summer 2019 Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program, “Integration of Biology and Materials.”
The REU program will run from late May through early August. It is open to non-Penn State undergraduate students enrolled at United States institutions in chemical engineering, bioengineering, biology, chemistry, materials science, physics, and related majors.
The REU program provides the basic skills and motivations needed to achieve future success in chemical engineering graduate programs and research careers. Students participating in the program will engage in a wide range of chemical engineering research projects that integrate biology and materials science. The program includes weekly group activities that provide an overview of current biomaterials technologies and expose students to the research challenges in each area. Students will conduct their research in state-of-the-art facilities in Penn State’s brand new Chemical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering Building.
Along with conducting research, REU students will have other valuable educational experiences. This includes a range of seminars and technical programs that will provide REU students with an overview of the integration of biology and materials science, and general research principles such as preparing research presentations and the graduate school experience. Students will also tour facilities such as the Penn State Materials Characterization Laboratory, Nanofabrication Facility, and the Huck Institutes for Life Sciences.
Along with research-related activities, the REU program will feature a variety of social programs throughout the summer, such as informal pizza lunches, evening barbeques, and nature hikes and other outings that take advantage of Central Pennsylvania’s many natural resources. REU students also will have access to Penn State’s many outstanding research, athletic, and arts facilities and local summer events such as minor league baseball games and the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts.

Please Note: Current Penn State students are not eligible to apply for this NSF-sponsored summer REU experience. Penn State students should consider applying to the Departmental Biofellowship Program.
