Doctor of Philosophy in Chemical Engineering
SPECIAL COVID-19 NOTICE: The McWhirter Graduate Program in Chemical Engineering has re-opened its Ph.D. application process. We understand that there are likely students whose plans have been disrupted or modified by the COVID-19 measures and their economic impact. We can waive the GRE requirement considering the short notice of this resumption. The new applications for Fall 2020 admission will go through the same rigorous screening process as the applications received prior to our original deadline and the admission offers will be made on a rolling basis. The application deadline is May 8, 2020.
Do research that makes a difference
The doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in chemical engineering is a structured yet versatile program tailored to individual research interests. Students are challenged to become experts in their area of research, aiding advancements in areas such as:
- fuel and energy production,
- sustainability,
- bimolecular energy,
- materials,
- nanotechnology,
- and many others.
Our program is ideal for engineers who wish to gain an expert understanding of the principals and philosophies of chemical engineering and learn the skills to become confident and independent researchers. Strong interdisciplinary research ties at Penn State also allow students to interact with experts in nearly every field.
Financial support available
In addition, we offer full financial support to all Ph.D. students making satisfactory progress toward their degree. This financial package includes tuition and fees, a stipend for living expenses, and healthcare benefits.
