Elsa Koninckx named student marshal for spring 2017 commencement


UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.— Elsa J. Koninckx was selected as the student marshal for the chemical engineering baccalaureate degree program at the Penn State College of Engineering spring commencement ceremony on May 5. Koninckx will receive a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering.

She has chosen Manish Kumar, professor of chemical engineering and professor in the College of Engineering, to be her faculty escort.

College of Engineering student marshals are selected for their outstanding academic achievement and contributions to engineering student life. 

Koninckx is a Schreyer Honors College student. Her thesis, "biomimetic protection for reverse osmosis membranes against free chlorine," with Dr. Kumar as her advisor. She also participated in undergraduate research with Dr. Milosavljevic in physical chemistry studying the effects of Copper (Cu 2+) on pyrene photophysics in 25% without ethanol.

She is the daughter of Jan Koninckx and Coreen Lee of Kennett Square. Koninckx is a 2013 graduate of Kennett High School.

Her academic honors include: The Evan Pugh Scholar Junior and Senior Award, Penn State President Sparks Award, Penn State President’s Freshman Award, and William and Wyllis Leonhard Engineering Scholar.

Koninckx’s scholarships include: John R. and Jeanette Dachille McWhirter Undergraduate Scholarship (MUGSE), Dingwall Foundation Korean Ancestry Grant and Penn State Provost’s Award.
