Liu receives Best Graduate Student Poster presentation award


UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Hongshen Liu, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Chemical Engineering, was awarded Best Graduate Student Poster Presentation at the 2018 Glass and Optical Materials Division (GOMD) Meeting of The American Ceramic Society. The meeting was held May 20-24 in San Antonio, TX.

Liu’s winning poster was titled “Effects of Surface Initial Condition on Aqueous Corrosion of Glass.” Her presentation discussed how initial surface condition of a glass can vary with the preparation condition and has a large impact on its reactivity. This study shows how the initial surface state of international simple glass, a common glass used as a reference, affects the aqueous corrosion behavior.

A native of Qingdao, in the Shandong province of China, Liu holds a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Beijing University of Chemical Technology and a master’s degree in chemical engineering from Cornell University. She is working towards a doctor of philosophy, chemical engineering, degree from Penn State. Liu is advised by Seong Kim, professor of chemical engineering and materials science and engineering.

The GOMD focuses on the scientific research and development, application and manufacture of all types of glass. Each year, their annual meeting gathers international technical leaders from industry, national laboratories and academia to examine and discuss emerging trends in glass science and technology.
